Shimano STEPS
Shimano STEPS (Shimano Total Electric Power System) is an integrated e-bike system developed by Shimano, a well-known manufacturer of bicycle components. It is designed to provide electric assistance to cyclists, enhancing their riding experience and making cycling more accessible to a wider range of people.
The Shimano STEPS system consists of several key components that work together seamlessly. These components include:
Drive Unit: The drive unit, also known as the motor, is the heart of the STEPS system. It provides electric assistance to the rider by applying power to the drivetrain. The drive unit is usually located near the bottom bracket or the rear hub of the bike.
Battery: The battery is responsible for storing and supplying the electric power required by the drive unit. It is usually mounted on the downtube or integrated into the frame design. Shimano offers different battery options with varying capacities, allowing riders to choose the one that suits their needs.
Display and Controls: The STEPS system includes a handlebar-mounted display unit that shows various information such as speed, battery level, and mode selection. It also provides controls to adjust the level of assistance and switch between different modes.
Sensors: Shimano STEPS incorporates several sensors to provide a smooth and responsive riding experience. These sensors include a torque sensor, which measures the amount of force applied by the rider, and a speed sensor, which detects the speed at which the bike is traveling. These sensors enable the system to deliver assistance in a natural and intuitive manner.
Transmission: The Shimano STEPS system is compatible with Shimano's wide range of drivetrain components, including derailleurs, shifters, and cassettes. It seamlessly integrates with the existing Shimano groupsets, allowing for smooth shifting and efficient power transfer.
Shimano STEPS offers different assistance modes, typically including eco, normal, high, and off modes. The system provides varying levels of assistance based on the selected mode and the rider's pedaling input. It is widely used in various types of e-bikes, including commuter bikes, mountain bikes, and city bikes.
Overall, Shimano STEPS is known for its reliability, performance, and integration with Shimano's extensive range of cycling components, making it a popular choice among e-bike manufacturers and riders alike.
Reviews
Check out what the cycling industry has to say on the Focus JAM² 7.9, from in-depth reviews to a few videos on what the bike is like to ride.
E-Mountain Bike
"The FOCUS JAM² 7.0 2022 can do a lot of things really well. The all-rounder boosts the fun factor in most situations and scores with sensible geometry, rich features and a fair price. For the perfect suspension setup, you should add volume spacers to the shock and tall riders may need a longer-travel dropper. Then, at the very latest, both beginners and experienced eMTBers will be able to play almost everywhere with the JAM². This bike is just as versatile as a keyboardist – a good one at that."

"What I can tell you is that it is a very comfortable climber. The seat angle is steep enough and there's plenty of room in the cockpit to give a comfortable position on a range of gradients. Meanwhile, the suspension is nice and supple even while putting down full power; throw in the 29" wheels and 2.6" tires and it gobbles up the chatter and delivers masses of traction on rough, wet climbs."
